Iwagumi

Japanese rock-only aquascape

Definition

Iwagumi is a Japanese aquascaping style featuring 3-7 stones in odd-numbered groupings, with a carpet plant covering the substrate. Pioneered by Takashi Amano.

Practical use

Classic stones: Seiryu, Manten, Ohko Dragon Stone. Carpet plants: Monte Carlo, dwarf hairgrass, dwarf baby tears (HC). Iwagumi tanks rely on plant growth + minimal hardscape; common mistake is cluttering with fish - 1 small school is the convention.
