Breeding Aquarium Fish: Basics for Clownfish, Bettas, Livebearers

Breeding aquarium fish is rewarding + profitable - a successful clownfish pair can produce $200-400 worth of fry monthly. Here are the species accessible to home breeders.

Breeding tank setup

Dedicate a 10-20g tank. Bare bottom OR fine sand. Sponge filter (gentle - won't suck up fry). Heater + dim light. Hide structures: java moss, terra cotta caves, spawning mops.

Conditioning the pair

Feed live foods (blackworms, baby brine, frozen mysis) 2-3x daily for 2-3 weeks. Female should be plump with eggs. Male shows breeding colors.

Triggers: water change with cooler water (-2°F), increased food, separated and reintroduced after 1 week.

Clownfish breeding

Pair: 1 large + 1 small (clownfish are sequential hermaphrodites - largest becomes female). Give them a flat clay tile near a host anemone or ceramic pot. They lay eggs every 12-16 days once mature.

Hatch larvae after 7-9 days (dark cycle triggers hatch). Move tile to a 10g rearing tank with rotifers + greenwater. Day 8-15 introduce baby brine. Day 30 weaning to pellets.

Betta breeding

Conditioning: 2 weeks of high-protein food. Place female in a clear container in male's tank for 3-4 days (visual contact, no contact). Release when male builds bubble nest + female has vertical bars.

After spawn: REMOVE FEMALE (male attacks her). Male tends nest 2-3 days. Remove male after fry are free-swimming. Feed infusoria → BBS.

Livebearer breeding (zero effort)

Place a male + 2-3 females in a 10g+ planted tank. Females drop fry every 28-35 days. Add a breeder box or heavy plant cover (java moss, frogbit) - fry hide in plants.

Adults eat fry without cover. Separate fry to grow-out tank at 1 week old. Feed crushed flake + microworms.

Selling fry

Local fish stores: store credit at $0.50-2 per fish for common species, $5-10+ for premium (designer guppies, plakat bettas, F1 wild bettas). Aquabid + Aquaswap: ship via FedEx priority overnight. Designer betta lines $20-200 each. Forums + Facebook groups: local pickup, build reputation.

Aquarium-keeping fundamentals

Whatever specific topic brought you here, four fundamentals govern long-term aquarium success: water quality, parameter stability, biological filtration, and species-appropriate husbandry. Skip any one and the others struggle to compensate.

Water quality: ammonia + nitrite at zero, nitrate under 30 ppm freshwater + 10 ppm reef. Test weekly with API or Salifert kits. Use our water parameter checker to score your readings against your tank type.

Parameter stability: stable wrong parameters beat fluctuating ideal parameters. Most fish tolerate a wide pH range if it's stable. Sudden swings of 0.4+ pH or 5+°F kill fish faster than chronic suboptimal values. Use temperature controllers (Inkbird) + automated dosing for consistency.

Biological filtration: the bacterial colony on your filter media + rock + substrate is the engine. Never replace all media at once. Use our filter turnover calculator to size correctly.

Species-appropriate husbandry: research adult size, territoriality, diet, and tankmate compatibility before purchase. Use our tank stocking calculator + compatibility guides.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an aquarium take to set up? 4-6 weeks for full cycling + first stocking. Use our cycle ETA calculator + how long does cycling take.

What's the best aquarium for beginners? 20-gallon long. Big enough for parameter stability, small enough for budget + space. See beginner picks.

How often should I do water changes? 25-30% weekly. See water change frequency Q&A + water change calculator.

Why does my fish keep dying? 5 leading causes: uncycled tank, wrong species pairings, no quarantine, undersized tank, neglected water-change schedule. See full diagnosis.
