NO3-

Definition

Nitrate (NO3-) is the final product of the nitrogen cycle. Far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, but accumulates over time and drives algae growth.

Practical use

Reef target: 5-10 ppm. FOWLR/freshwater target: 10-20 ppm. Control via water changes, refugium with macroalgae, biopellets, or carbon dosing. Test weekly.
